You’ve probably heard horror stories of people dealing with “dodgy builders” where all sorts of ugly issues have come up. Poor communication, cost overruns, sites left in disarray and general unhappiness with the whole process. There is a lot you can do to avoid bad experiences – and it starts not only with selecting a reputable one, but also being smart about the whole thing!

  1. Make sure you have thought about what you really want.
This sounds obvious, but often you’ll save a lot of time and unnecessary stress when you know what you’re after! When you approach a builder, make sure you have a list of what you want included and they will be able to assist you with clear answers!
  2. Have a pretty good idea of your budget.
Believe it or not, no builder wants to put you in a position where your budget is stretched to the absolute limit! This doesn’t end well, and means that both parties will be unhappy – know what you can afford and stick to it!
  3. Be comfortable with who your builder is.
It’s simple – people will do business with people they like. Find someone honest, trustworthy, and who you connect with. That way, communication will be freeflowing, easy, and expectations will be met!
  4. Let the builder manage the project.
This is what they do day in and day out. As much as you may want to control the process, all you need to do is ask a simple question rather than try to overmanage the whole process. After all, we’re all good at what we do frequently, and unless your own job is a builder/supervisor/scheduler you don’t need to take over!
  5. Inspect your home at completion.
Let the Builder know if you are unhappy with anything (and let them know throughout the process too!) – no one likes nasty surprises!
